Gene Pitney's career in the U.S. took a downturn after mid-1966, when "Backstage" ended his run of Top 40 hits. "Backstage" peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1966. Gene Pitney died of a heart attack in his hotel room in Cardiff, Wales, on April 5, 2006. His final show at Cardiff's St. David's Hall earlier in the evening earned him a standing ovation.
