Directed by Norman Jewison. Aa Soviet submarine accidentally gets lodged in a sandbar on the coast of a New England town. The sub's second-in-command, is ordered by his commander to free up the sub and leave before an international incident erupts. Hoping to secure a power boat to tug the sub out to sea, the Russian and his men call upon a vacationing TV writer, passing themselves off as Norwegians. When this ruse fails, he is reluctantly compelled to force his his host at gunpoint to fetch his motorboat, while a gentle-natured Russian sailor is left behind to guard the man's wife and a pretty neighbor girl. The plot thickens when the locals, notably when the sheriff and a super patriotic retiree spread the word that the Russians have invaded their little community.
